PUBLIC HEARING
TOWN OF LEE
Save Approximately 50% on Monthly Electric Bills
“ Applies to Maine Katahdin Region and Surroundings”
The Great Northern Power District (GNPD) is trying to establish itself as a “consumer owned utility (COU)”, also known as an electric cooperative. State law provides each town with this opportunity.
1. Maine Law, MRSA Title 35A Chapter 37 supports establishment and provides legal framework.
2. Consumer owned utility (COU), also known as electric cooperatives are publicly owned by the people/towns.
3. COUs normally set price rates at much lower rates than private companies. Private companies must pay out to their investors.
4. Rural COUs responsible for U.S. Department of Agriculture loan payments and legal fees; NOT the towns.
5. COUs provide faster response times for outrage, maintenance, upgrades, expansion, etc.
6. COUs will pay their “fair” share of property taxes; NO abatements requests!
